Insects and ink :P

Does anyone have any interesting tattoos of gardeny things? Flowers, butterflies, plants, insects, birds etc? Comment if you do! I'd be interested.

Something I've been wanting to do for a while is get started on the garden that I plan to have tattooed on my back. I think tattooing is such a beautiful, visceral part of so many cultures across the world and it seems a celebration to have my favourite things in the world - living, growing things - created as art on my body.

The first thing that I plan to have put on is my ladybeetles. I love them - as I type, my computer is covered with them. My garden is full of them and when I go to pull out weeds I always carefully pick off the ladybeetles and place them gently on a plant that is a bit afflicted with aphids. Natural pest control is great :)

Here is my favourite ladybeetle of all - Harmonia Octomaculata; the eight spotted bug.

This little guy isn't common around my area (we have more of the Harmonia Commonalis type) but I think he's beautiful. He is rivalled in my bug-affection only by the scarab or the cotton harlequin bug.

What are your favourite creepy crawlies in the garden?

I have a bumblebee on my shoulder and my partner's initial on the inner part of my left forearm.

I love insects---my favorites are bees. My grampa had honeybee hives so I learned a lot from him about them; I love the rest of them too, bumbles, masons, carpenters and orchard bees. One of the prettiest bees is a short-tongued bee (Halictidae) often referred to as a metallic bee because of its shiny green color. I love dragonflies and damsel flies too, especially the pretty green and blue damsels.

Even the pests are interesting in their way, although I am less than happy when my plants are under attack!

A short tongued bee? Is it's tongue actually short or is it just named that for some other reason?

Bee hives are wonderful. I once stumbled upon some abandoned hives when I was camping. The bush had completely overtaken them. It was really magical.

Oh my! lovely photo.

I like the ladybugs, the praying mantids, the parasitic wasps of all sorts, ants, earthworms, bumble bees (especially when drunk on nectar enough to allow petting), and swallowtail butterfly larvae!

That's the short list.

I didn't take the photo in this case but I will get some of my beetles when I can :)

Praying mantids are gorgeous...I love the trance like rock-back-and-forth they do when they are about to eat something. Earthworms are lovely. There is a scene in 'Seven Years In Tibet' when the monks are building a movie-house and they take a long time because they won't abide harming the earthworms...gardening is like that for me :)

Great topic!

I have a red back spider on my belly (from above my navel to my pelvis bone, mixed in with some tribal work) and a Lesser long-eared bat Nyctophilus geoffroyi) that stretches from hip to hip across my back...I'm planning on adding a huntsman spider and a water rat as well as a tree of life design.

I've got thistles on my right arm. It's kind of fading out though.

I like dragon flies. My kids both love woodbugs... my son likes how they turn into a ball when you pick them up & my daughter talks to them... so I have to say them too, because they keep the kids busy while I play!
